More 2016 Organic Gardening Classes!!

Due to very strong demand, we are continuing our organic gardening workshop offerings.  We will be repeating the favorites, as well as introducing some new and more advanced topics.  Feel free to comment below if you’d like to learn something else too!!

Are you looking to grow your own food this year?  Yarducopia will continue offering gardening classes this spring.  All proceeds will help fund Yarducopia, which creates gardening and community-building opportunities in Anchorage.  These are small, hands-on classes that are limited to the first 8 people to sign up, so we will have plenty of time to answer your burning questions!   All classes are held in midtown Anchorage at 505 W. Northern Lights.  You may attend one or all of the classes.  Sign up by following the class links below, first come, first served!  If you add your name to the waiting list, you get first shot to sign up if the class is repeated:

photo (36)Thursday, March 3, 2016, 7-8pm Year-Round Composting With Worms* $10

Come learn how important compost is to your organic garden and how you can safely and cleanly compost your kitchen scraps inside with worms in the winter – and year round!  We will talk about commercial and home-made bins, answer your questions, and meet the worms involved (you can even take some home if you are ready to start!)  Kids love worm bins!  *No worm touching required 🙂

Go beyond organic!  Growing food forests mimics nature’s built in ways of nourishing plants to make a garden that requires less digging, planting, weeding, and fertilizing and has fewer pests.  We will talk about choosing fruit trees, berry bushes, perennial and annual flowers and vegetables that all work well when planted together and how to buy, plant, and care for them.

Thursday, March 24, 2016, 7-8pm Seed Starting and Planning Your Vegetable IMG_4844Garden $10 

Learn what vegetables grow well in Anchorage and how to plan your garden and what seeds to order.  Learn when and how to start vegetable plants inside your house to be ready to go outside in the spring for a bountiful harvest!  We will make a colorful garden plan in class and start some herbs that you can take home with you!

Yarducopia builds instant, amazing gardens with sheet mulch!  Come learn all the tricks, where to get the materials in Anchorage, and how to plant them.  You could have your best, lushest organic garden ever!  We’ll also let you know how to sign up for Yarducopia if you want to build sheet mulch gardens with us!  This will be a theory class, and there will be opportunities to take hands-on building classes later in the spring.

DOC010Saturday, March 26, 2016, 1pm – 4pm Bigger, Better, Lusher Gardens – Organic Growing Through Soil Science. $25

Learn how to manage your garden the organic way in this soil science intensive geared to Anchorage gardeners. We will cover soil biology, texture, structure and techniques to build organic matter as well as the secret life of roots. Learn through hands-on activities the science behind feeding your soil, not your plant!  If you have thawed soil, bring a sample and discover your garden’s unique characteristics.
