There’s a New Gardener in Town!

Greetings Alaska Gardeners! My name is Maddy Poehlein and I am the Yarducopia intern for the summer! I just finished my Junior year at Whitman College and am excited to be spending the summer in Alaska gardening and learning about pressing Environmental Justice issues. I am majoring in Environmental Studies and Politics and have a strong interest in the injustices simultaneously imposed upon the environment and vulnerable people within society. Beyond academic interests, I love the outdoors, sports, music, and engaging with my community.

Along with being the Yarducopia intern, I will be participating in other projects with the exceptional women at Alaska Community Action on Toxics. So far, I have helped Michelle finish up building and planting the final gardens of the 2017 season and created a recipe book with instructions on how to harvest and prepare veggies grown in Yarducopia gardens. Soon we will move on to garden visits after building one last garden at my house! I am very excited to experience Alaska gardening myself and think the experience will better prepare me for assisting Yarducopia gardeners.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you!
